Is Osteopathy safe in pregnancy?

Osteopathy is safe at all stages of pregnancy and can help alleviate many conditions associated with pregnancy, labour and after the birth. Osteopathy in pregnancy is not new, but many people are unaware of its full potential.

When lying on your side in bed, place a pillow under 'the bump' to provide support and also put a pillow between your knees to prevent back strain.

If you prefer to lie on your back, place a pillow beneath your knees to keep them bent.

You do not have to have symptoms to see Adam; an assessment during and after pregnancy can help ensure that everything is functioning well.

Osteopaths are highly skilled and undergo a minimum of 4 years training. Gentle osteopathic techniques are very beneficial and perfectly safe at all stages of pregnancy.

During Pregnancy

As a mother to be you are carrying an increasingly heavy load with enormous physical, chemical and emotional changes taking place over a relatively short period of time - your body has to adapt to your increase in weight and the shift of your centre of gravity as well as making room for your baby as it grows.

This can be particularly challenging if you already have a child in the family and are spending time carrying them about as well. You may be experiencing backache, pain in your sides, ribs or hips, and you may also find that simple things like walking, sitting or turning over in bed are now uncomfortable, or even painful.

One of the biggest changes is the softening of the ligaments so that the pelvic bones can widen sufficiently to allow the baby to pass through. This softening affects the whole body not just the pelvis, making it more vulnerable to strain as the baby grows.

Considerable changes to your posture take place too and previous injuries, accidents or postural strains from work can make it more difficult for the body to accommodate these changes, increasing the likelihood of pain and discomfort during pregnancy.

Problems such as these are common in pregnancy but that doesn't mean that you have to suffer! Pain or discomfort is a sign that your body is struggling and needs help.
